As you build up your survival kit, you will probably want to add a firesteel ferrocerium rod. These are usually referred to as ferro rods and are incredibly useful for starting fires. Before you can use your new ferro rod, you need to take special note of the coating placed on the rod. The black coating is a protective barrier to prevent the rod from throwing sparks during shipping. The coating is fairly simple to remove.
One of the most exciting things about primitive outdoor survival skills is the fact that nothing is viewed as garbage. Everything in the environment can be put to use if a person is willing to think out of the box. The idea of reuse and recycle has never been more accurate than in the art of primitive survival skills.
Somewhere down the road, a good tracker became about as hard to come by as Bigfoot. They have been seen on television, in the movies and a few claim to have met one in real life, but they are so rare (according to the movies) one must question whether or not they are real. With the deity-like status, that must mean that normal folk like you and I can never hope to become trackers, right? Wrong. But hold on a minute, just because a guy says he is a tracker, does not automatically make him one. With that said, a word of warning if you decide to learn the art of tracking, be careful who you ask for training. Not everybody is who they say they are.
Survival enthusiasts often resort to the Law of Threes during training and practice runs to keep the idea top of mind. The Law of Threes is one way to remember exactly what needs to be done when things get a little crazy.
Food is a pretty popular subject in the world of survival. Surprisingly, food is really not at the top of your list of needs. Despite its relatively low rank on the list of needs, it is typically at the top of most want lists. Now, just because it isn’t physically necessary, doesn’t mean food should just be ignored. It can go a long way to making a person feel better, which is just as important in a survival situation. With that said, the following tips and clues will help you procure food, without expending a great deal of precious energy. It is less taxing on one’s energy stores to dine on edible plants rather than trying to find some meat source. In fact, in some situations, it is more beneficial to stick with plants rather than waste the time and energy trying to find a meat source and then going through the task of making it edible.
You cannot use much rope without fastening it somewhere or somehow. That is why knots are always tied in (pun intended!) articles about rope. As I am sure you are aware, there are several types of knots. Each type of knot has its own particular benefit. Increasing your knot repertoire will help you to better utilize your paracord or other type of rope for your unique need.
Men, listen up. You have a pretty basic decision in front of you. Do you keep your survival knowledge to yourself or do you involve your family? Look at it this way, if you don’t educate them now, you will either have to walk away and leave them to fend for themselves in an emergency (which is clearly not an ideal option) or you are going to be forced to waste precious time and resources to give them a crash course during a survival situation. Neither option sounds real appealing, does it?
Survival gear is not always what it appears to be. Take for example, a simple trash bag. Although these extraordinarily inexpensive and handy bags are everywhere, most people would not associate them with survival. Garbage bags are indeed a crucial tool that should be in every survival kit.
Many people have found the idea of the Law of Threes a valuable bit of information to apply to their own survival plans. However, knowing about an idea and actually putting that plan to work can make a person a little apprehensive. How can you make the concept a reality, easily retained, and used when the need arises?
